One of our (many) projects this summer has been building new pens for our post weaned calves. We used to just have one big pasture for all of the calves that were out of hutches and younger then 6 months old. Now we have 6 smaller pens so that the calves can be closely grouped based on size and age. It is only been a couple months, but our calves are all ready much better looking! We also increased the total size of the area, so more room for each calf, plus less competition for food and water. Also allows us to transition their feeding a little bit more gradually instead of abrupt switches in feeding.
We are still working on building small sheds in each pen for shelter, plus we have some concrete to pour for feeding, and a few other odds and ends, but it is starting to come together.
